Nicola is a Worcestershire based artist who studied Fine Art at Worcester University. She now specialises in contemporary Still Life oil paintings taking inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age but with a contemporary twist. In a society that is bombarded with fast moving visual imagery, Nicola believes that a still life painting can help viewers regain the capacity to be still, to gaze and wonder. She is particularly fascinated by the quality of light and colour revealed in objects, food and flowers. She often uses reflective surfaces to create images within images. Nicola usually paints on traditional gesso boards: the luminosity in her paintings is achieved through thin glazes of transparent paint. In her most recent work Nicola has been working with gold leaf drawing on the tradition of Japanese screen painting. Nicola has exhibited at the New Art Gallery, Walsall, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, as well as presenting solo exhibitions at Worcester and Carlisle Cathedrals.
