White Court Art are privileged & excited to host internationally acclaimed quilt artist Bethan Ash. A beautiful selection of her work can be found on our website.

Bethan Ash is a professional quilt maker and teacher with a background in fashion design. After a career in the fashion industry she discovered quilt making as an artistic medium that best expressed her personal vision. She believes that colour is the subject matter of quilt making and this is shown in her distinctively devised art quilts with colour that vibrates in abstract and geometric shapes of clean, crisp lines.

Bethans rich, colourful quilts are created using improvisational collage techniques. Working instinctively, she simply layers fabric shapes onto a prepared background and fuses them down, then adds stitching later. Each quilt is cut freehand, without the use of rulers or templates. Her work, while based in the tradition of quilt making, has become more akin to collage. Most of her quilts are non-representational.  Abstractions, spatial relationships and colour are the backbone of her work. She works improvisationally and believes that treating the fabric like paper allows greater design freedom, therefore making it more exciting to create.

A member of the prestigious international Quilt Art Group, Bethan has exhibited widely; USA, Japan, UK, and her work has been bought by museums in the UK & US, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.  Bethan can also be found in print, both in her own works and in representational multi-artist publications on the art of quilt making.
